His musical journey first started by playing the Euphonium at the age of 7. He quickly developed through Ceredigion’s local youth ensembles and was successful in solo performances at National Eisteddfod’ competitions.
It wasn’t until the age of 16 when Huw saw the light and decided to pick up the trombone. His studies took him to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama under the tutelage of Roger Cutts and Donal Bannister. It was here where he got to play with a plethora of brass bands and got the privilege of taking part on the Welsh National Opera’s placement scheme.
In 2015 Huw took off to London where he began his masters degree at the Royal Academy of Music where he had the pleasure of meeting his fellow slide action enthusiasts. Huw received expert guidance and from professors such as Matt Gee, Mark Templeton and Ian Bousfield. Since graduating Huw has been busy freelancing with various orchestras such as London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to name but a few.
Huw also enjoys playing doubling instruments such as the Bass Trumpet and Alto trombone. When Slide Action ventured out to Indiana back in 2019 Huw also reached the final of the ITF Solo Alto trombone competition.
To distract himself from blowing down a metal pipe all day Huw likes to spend his time baking, playing squash and singing in a Welsh choir.
